We premiered the work in London as part of the Tête à Tête Opera Festival 2023, bringing the sounds and stories of Cornwall to the capital. Audiences loved it, they felt a heartfelt recognition of something rare and rooted. Later, we performed in Cornwall itself, where the hedge’s presence wasn’t just symbolic, it was surrounding them.
A few years ago , I had the pleasure of devising, founding and co-composing The Hedge, the World and Everything, an experimental folk opera brought to life in collaboration with Cornish-based artists.
The production blends folk music, contemporary composition, and operatic voice with spoken word and sound design. It was playful, haunting and deeply immersive like walking along a hedge at dusk, half dreaming, and half remembering.
Performing this work felt like holding a mirror up to the countryside.
